Annual Christmas Appeal Kicks Off with $10,00 Lead Gift from Fort Frances Kiwanis Club

The holiday season is a time for joy, giving, and wrapping yourself in the warmth of family. This holiday season, the Fort Frances Kiwanis Club has spread that warmth to hundreds of families in the Rainy River district with a lead gift of $10,000 towards the Riverside Foundation for Health Care Annual Christmas Appeal.

Santa’s elves have been working hard in the workshop to build Riverside Facilities a new Panda Warmer for one of the birthing suites at LVGH. The Panda Warmer and accompanying Spacelabs NICU Monitor that is required, come at a collective cost of approximately $75,000. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and guests at our 25th Anniversary Fall Gala, we are approaching our goal, and with more support we can get there.

A Panda Warmer is used for newborns immediately after delivery to provide a warm, bright area for the initial exam. The accompanying monitor measures heart rate, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation. This portable unit, with a built-in scale, allows for the baby to be assessed and cared for at the mother’s bedside. It can also be brought to the OR if a c-section is required.

In addition, the Panda Warmer is utilized in neonatal and infant resuscitation. Because it has all the monitoring devices required, it provides for streamlined and faster resuscitation response time. “We have one Panda Warmer but would like a second one so that each birthing room has the same thing. They are easier to use than the older models and having the same equipment increases staff familiarization and speeds up response time in a code” said Dr. Lorena Jenks.

The Fort Frances Kiwanis Club asked the Foundation to make a list, and after checking it twice, chose to support the purchase of the Panda Warmer through the gift of $10,000. The donation was made possible by various fundraisers that the Kiwanis club runs particularly, their Trip of the Month Raffle. Tickets for the 2023 Trip of the Month are available now but selling quickly.

Others wishing to give towards this year’s Christmas Appeal can easily do so by filling out and returning their pledge card that is included in the mail out dropped off at the post office on November 15th. If you do not receive an appeal in the mail by the end of November, donations can also be made by calling the Foundation Office at 274-4803, online at www.riversidefoundation.ca/christmas-appeal or by mailing in a cheque with a note in the memo that it is for the Christmas Appeal to 110 Victoria Ave, Fort Frances ON, P9A 2B7.

The Riverside Foundation for Health Care is the fundraising entity for Riverside Health Care Facilities. It is our mission to raise funds for the purchase of medical equipment, the support of patient/client services, and the improvement of medical facilities for all residents of the area served by Riverside Health Care. Donors can choose to designate their donation to a specific facility, department, or approved piece of capital equipment. Every dollar designated to a specific fund is used for it’s intended purpose. Riverside Foundation honours the capital approval process that is in place at Riverside Facilities and is only able to support the purchase of any medical equipment, support patient/client services, and support any improvement of medical facilities that has been granted approval by Riverside Health Care Facilities.
